The latest in "plant-based" from Vitafoods Insights

  • Rising concerns about climate change is leading to a a reduction in the consumption of beef, lamb and dairy and an increase in the interest in plant-based diets. A recent report A Menu for Change, published by the Behavioural Insights Team, offers ways to improve the sustainability of diets at a global scale. As well as making recommendations to governments and civil society, the report recommends industry to make plant based options more available and even the default choice whenever possible.
  • Consumers are health conscious and increasingly seek guilt-free and more sustainable foods. Plant based foods using texturised vegetable protein, seitan, and others have gained considerable traction in the market. It is estimated the global texturised vegetable protein market to be valued at approximately $1.1 billion in 2019, which is projected to grow at a CAGR of approximately 6%, to reach $2 billion by 2029.
  • The global wheat protein market is set for a healthy 5% CAGR over 2019-2026 as the ingredient is increasingly perceived as a viable alternative for vegetarian and vegan populations. The European market  specially will continue to gain impetus from expansion of bakery sector and thriving sales of plant-based food products. According to Food Agriculture Organization, European countries produce approximately 30% of the wheat in the world. Manufacturers of natural ingredient-based proteins are promoting their products through various channels including magazines such as bodybuilding.com, online portals, and marketing campaigns to fuel demand for plant-protein enriched products. This is expected to boost the wheat protein market in Europe.
